The online home of Duncan Wilson.
A product designer with over 25 years experience in digital. I deliver research-led user experiences for global brands, including RAC, Dyson, Clarks, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer, Microsoft, and Yahoo!

User research
I lead product design from discovery to launch. I plan, recruit, and facilitate user research sessions, extract insights, and report back recommendations. I work with data to create user personas and bring clarity to decision-making.
_

User experience
I lead requirement and ideation workshops, define user journeys and information architecture, and prototype in low and high-fidelity. I deliver design systems and pattern libraries in line with accessibility and usability standards.
_

Team leadership
I lead teams of researchers, designers, and copywriters. I scope and resource the largest digital projects. I manage multiple stakeholders, and work collaboratively across businesses. I lead agency and contractor relationships, and am used to working in an Agile framework.
_

RAC
I led the product design of the RAC’s first digital breakdown service; launched during lockdown and now with a million breakdowns reported.

Clarks

_

Clarks App
A beautiful, gestural interface complements the high-concept photography, in Clarks’ first adults app.

Dyson Fans and Balloons
With only limited seeding to the usual tech blogs, this has reached over 3 million views.
What marks this out as great communication for Dyson is that it's demonstrating some quite complex technology in a simple visual way. The clever bit is when the balloon is magically drawn towards the back of the fans. That's called inducement and entrainment - but it's more fun this way!And when Bruce sterling, godfather of cyberpunk, blogs it, you know you're having fun!_

Dyson Teaser
A million emails were sent out with a rather excellent teaser video. The subsequent tweeting pushed Dyson up into the top five search terms on Google. And all that buzz is now collected on a social media aggregator site. It's almost like joined up thinking!
_

Now we’ve taken the blades out of the fan
Simple copywriting and execution in this teaser for The Dyson Air Multiplier.
The world's first bladeless fan is pretty impressive. Air is taken in through an impeller in the base and then directed out over a surface shaped like an airplane wing; this causes it to attract more air, hence the multiplier name. What you can't see is that the air that reaches you is perfectly smooth - old fans will never feel the same again._

Casa400
A responsive design for a modern concept hotel.
_

Golfbreak.nl

With beautiful jungle environments to scroll through, and atmospheric sounds to listen to, it keeps children entertained, while encouraging perception skills and language development. The first in a projected series - stay tuned, but don’t hold your breath!_

Dyson iPhone App
A port of the hugely successful Telescope Game, a web-based puzzler from a few years earlier, that was played a million times at launch. This was completely rebuilt for the iPhone platform and enabled us to develop a new set of skills in-house.
_

Sainsbury’s iDTV
The full web shop, redesigned as one of the first and largest e-commerce sites on digital television, with a carefully streamlined interface.
_

Sainsbury’s Shop
The industry-leading online grocery store for Sainsbury's. Judged more usable than Amazon by Nielsen/NetRatings.
_

_

Yahoo!
A redesign of the Yahoo! Travel site. A very complex piece of user-centric design; optimised for SEO, and localised across five countries.

Orange
A help site for Orange handsets, a complex information architecture translated into a beautifully simple interface.
_

Orange Shop
An early example from Orange. I led the account for two years, during which time I grew the team from 3 to 10 designers, redesigned the site, rebranded Orange online, and built the Orange Shop - which now sells more handsets than any high street Orange Shop.
